Don Hershman

‹Return to Previous Page
Don Hershman is a San Francisco–based contemporary painter whose work explores the relationship between structure, identity, memory, and the built environment. Balancing a career as a podiatric surgeon with his artistic practice, Hershman brings a distinctive perspective to painting, combining technical precision with expressive experimentation.
Hershman studied premedical bioscience and psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo before completing his medical education and surgical training in California. Throughout his medical career, he continued to draw and paint, developing his artistic voice and exploring the visual relationships between form, shadow, and space. In 1992, his first group exhibition marked a turning point, encouraging him to pursue his art more seriously.
Working primarily with acrylic, ink, pencil, and mixed media, Hershman creates richly textured compositions characterized by layered geometry, vibrant color, and intricate patterns. His bodies of work range from urban abstractions and architectural studies to still lifes and explorations of identity. Through repeated lines, shifting perspectives, and carefully constructed surfaces, he transforms familiar subjects into compelling visual narratives.
Hershman’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including a juried exhibition at San Francisco’s de Young Museum in 2020 and solo exhibitions in New York and California. His paintings are held in private collections and continue to attract attention for their distinctive treatment of texture, shadow, and form.
Through his evolving practice, Hershman investigates how environments and experiences shape our understanding of ourselves, creating works that balance architectural structure with emotional depth and personal reflection.

“Shapes, shadows, and textures reveal new ways of seeing the world around us.”
